(OLYMPIA)- The Washington Department of Ecology will not require 483 well owners in the Skagit Basin to curtail their water use to comply with a court decision on water right regulations. The Swinomish Indian Tribal Community supports Ecology’s decision provided the water use is offset or mitigated. The state Supreme Court on Oct. 3 ruled in favor of the Swinomish Tribe who challenged Ecology’s 2006 water management rule for the Skagit Basin. The court found Ecology had no authority to allow new water wells under that rule.
