(MOUNT VERNON)- The Mount Vernon Fire Department responded to a vehicle fire this afternoon at Blade Chevrolet. A large column of black smoke could be seen from Interstate 5, prompting several calls from passers-by. Firefighters arrived to find a brand-new travel trailer fully involved in flames that were accelerated by gasoline, and used a water/foam mixture to extinguish the fire. The fire was started when an employee attempted to refuel a portable gasoline-powered pump that was operating near the trailer. The hot pump engine ignited the gasoline as well as the gas container, and spread quickly to the new trailer. The employee received minor singe burns. Other employees quickly moved two other trailers that were in the vicinity, preventing them from catching fire. The loss was estimated at $9,400.
