Office is being remodeled

(Skagit County)- Skagit County Planning and Development Services will see some delays as the office is remodeled. In two weeks, operations will begin moving to temporary quarters at 1700 E. College Way. The front counter will be open on a limited basis. The department will be closed Friday, May 23rd through Tuesday, May 27th, while the actual move is taking place.

EVERETT, Wash. (AP) _ Police are investigating the apparent homicide of a man whose body was found in a boarding house in Everett. Sgt. Robert Goetz says the death was reported after 4 p.m. yesterday.

State is buying tree farm

SEATTLE (AP) _ The state Department of Natural Resources is buying a 985-acre tree farm near Arlington to preserve the land from development. When the $4 million deal closes the land will be become part of the state school trust holdings. Timber sales will help pay for school construction.

In high school softbal this afternoon, Mount Vernon hosts Sedro-Woolley and La Conner plays at Seattle Lutheran at 4 o’clock, while Burlington-Edison plays at Mount Baker and Anacortes visits Blaine at 4:30 p.m.

In high school boy’s soccer tonight, Anacortes plays Archbishop Murphy at 5:30 p.m. at Bellingham’s Civic Stadium in the Northwest 2-A District Tournament, while Mount Vernon plays Shorecrest tonight at 7:30 p.m. at Edmonds Stadium in the Northwest 3-A District Tournament.

In high school girl’s tennis this afternoon, Sehome hosts the Northwest 2-A District Tournament starting at noon, Mount Vernon hosts the Northwest 3-A Sub-District Tournament starting at noon, and Stanwood hosts the Western Conference North Division Tournament starting at 3 o’clock.

In high school boy’s golf this afternoon, Battle Creek in Marysville hosts the Western Conference North Division Tournament starting at 12:30 p.m. In high school girl’s golf, the Tri-District 2-B Tournament continues today at Gallery Golf Course near Oak Harbor while Camaloch Golf Course on Camano Island hosts the Western Conference North Division Tournament starting at 1 o’clock this afternoon.

(Mount Vernon)- No one was injured yesterday, when a Mount Vernon woman drove her van into the Mount Vernon Post Office. A wall on the north side of the Cleveland Avenue building was pushed in and some windows were broken. Postmaster D.R. Monty says you should be able to get to your box to check your mail today.

A half win for local tribe

(La Conner)- The Swinomish Tribe won half of its challenge of Skagit County’s Critical Areas Ordinance. The State Supreme Court agreed with the tribe, the main part of Skagit County’s ordinance to protect salmon streams is inadequate. The court let stand the Growth Management Hearings Board’s determination that the program is also deficient in failing to establish clear standards and goals.

Arlington airport to receive more funding

(Arlington)- Last year’s federal airport funding bill will soon start funding airports with a $3.5-billion pork package. Senate sponsor, Patty Murray says the Arlington airport expects 150,000 federal dollars to determine if it will become a regional business airport. The Anacortes airport gets a million dollars from the same federal pot for construction.
