A local man received a prison sentence in a tax case

Authorities are asking a driver in a hit and run case to come forward

(SEDRO-WOOLLEY)— It’s been a week since a 56-year-old Sedro-Woolley grandfather died after a hit and run along Minkler Road.

Roger Ballenger’s family and the Washington State Patrol are asking for the driver who hit Ballenger last Wednesday night, January 25^th, to come forward.

Ballenger was hit by a full size pickup truck while walking along Minkler Road last Wednesday night after getting off a Skagit Transit bus about 6:30 p.m.

He was walking to his home a short distance away when a witness saw him fall to the ground.

The State Patrol says the witness saw Ballenger fall, pulled his car to a stop, and put on his emergency lights and flashed his headlights, trying to get the attention of other motorists.

The witness says the truck he saw approaching never slowed down — it hit Ballenger and kept going.

He was airlifted to Harborview Medical Center where he died.

The King County Medical Examiner’s Office listed the cause of death as blunt force trauma—injuries sustained in an accident.

The Washington State Patrol is asking anyone with information to contact Detective Charles Sletten at (360) 654-1204

Officials are investigating a boat explosion

(SEQUIM)— Clallam County Fire District No. 3, the U.S. Coast Guard and Sequim Police are investigating a boat explosion at the John Wayne Marina in Sequim Tuesday night that seriously injured one man, who was flown from Olympic Medical Center to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle overnight.

Authorities say 78-year-old Keith Bryant had been working on a propane tank on the cabin cruiser, a 38-foot boat named Escale, when the explosion happened.

Bryant reportedly suffered back and shrapnel injuries causing open wounds.

He was in stable condition at last report.

Fire officials say no other injuries were reported, although the explosion was powerful enough to damage boats up to 75 yards away.

Cities and counties may soon be able to impose a gas tax

(OLYMPIA)- Cities and counties could soon be asking voters’ permission to impose a gas tax to pay for paving roads and plugging potholes.

Local governments would be allowed to collect up to 3 cents a gallon with voter approval under bills circulating in the Washington State Legislature to help cash-strapped communities raise money for transportation improvements.

In addition to the gas tax, the bills provide broader avenues to increasing road levies and car tab fees as well as reviving a motor vehicle excise tax.

The Senate Transportation Committee will conduct a public hearing today on its version of the legislation.

Senator Mary Margaret Haugen of Camano Island, the chairwoman of the panel, said the legislation responds to what city and county leaders requested.

Mount Vernon’s School Board will hear presentations tonight

(MOUNT VERNON)— The Mount Vernon School Board will hear presentations from students at Centennial and Washington Elementary schools when they meet tonight.

They’ll also get an update from Superintendent Carl Bruner on a regional implementation grant for a teacher-principal evaluation project, discuss the colors for the Mount Vernon High school gym/fieldhouse renovation project, and discuss other issues.

The Mount Vernon School Board meets tonight at 6 o’clock in the New Main Library at Mount Vernon High School at 314 North 9^th Street.
