(ANACORTES)— The Anacortes City Council passed a resolution Monday night to join a Tourism Promotion Area supporters say would help better market the county as a whole and ultimately bring in more tourism revenue to benefit everyone in the county. Council members voted 6-0 in favor of the proposal. The promotion area allows cities that join to apply a state law enabling them to collect fees from some hotels within the area. Under the Skagit County proposal, hotels with more than 40 rooms would charge a $2-per-night, per-room fee to fund a marketing plan for the county or individual cities within the area. At Monday night’s council meeting, Mayor Dean Maxwell voiced his support for the proposal as a means of boosting Skagit County’s overall tourism industry. Read more at goskagit.com.

(SKAGIT)- Two suspected DUI accidents occurred on Sunday, one of which resulted in the death of a Marblemount man. Scott Richmond was speeding east on Highway 20 when his Saturn left the roadway to the right and struck a tree. The car came to rest down an embankment. Richmond was found dead at the scene. That same night, a 35-year-old Port Hadlock man was driving west on Highway 20 in Anacortes when his vehicle left the road to the right, hitting the guard rail on the right shoulder. The car then crossed the road to the left shoulder, hitting the jersey barrier there. The man was not wearing a seatbelt and drugs or alcohol are believed to be involved. He was taken to an area hospital for treatment of his injuries. Read more at goskagit.com.

(HAMILTON)— A 70-year-old Woodinville man spent more than nine hours lost on Hamilton-area trails last weekend before search and rescue teams found him safe with his horse. The man was riding his horse a wooded trail system Friday afternoon off Medford Road when he got turned around and couldn’t find his way back to a familiar area. His wife called 911 which initiated a Search and Rescue response to the area. Horse riders from King and Snohomish county search and rescue teams were training in the area and also called to help. Additionally, Skagit County Search and Rescue’s ATV team responded to the area and found the man at 6:45 a.m. Saturday morning. Read more at goskagit.com.
